Checklist before you decide to have implants

Checklist before you decide to have implants
Considering Dental Implants? The Questions You Should Ask Before You Decide

If you’re considering dental implants, you may already have started researching your options.

You may have looked at different clinics, different clinicians and, inevitably, different prices.

But how do you actually know what you should be comparing?

For most patients, dental implants are unfamiliar territory. You aren’t expected to know what should happen during an implant assessment, what questions to ask about your gum and bone health, or what qualifications and experience you should look for in the person carrying out your treatment.

And that’s exactly why we’ve created our Dental Implant Checklist.

It’s not about telling you where to have treatment

At Perio & Implants, we believe an informed patient is in a much better position to make the right decision for themselves.

Our checklist isn’t designed to tell you that you should choose us.

It’s designed to help you understand what good implant planning should involve and what questions you should feel comfortable asking — wherever you ultimately decide to have treatment.

For example, has your whole mouth been assessed, rather than simply the area where an implant might be placed? Have your gums and bone been properly evaluated? Have alternative treatment options been explained? Do you know who will actually carry out your treatment and what their experience is?

If the answer to any of these questions is no, ask why.

Don’t compare on price alone

Of course, cost matters. For most people it will be an important part of their decision.

But when comparing implant treatment, a headline price doesn’t necessarily tell you whether you are comparing like with like.

One treatment plan may include a much more detailed assessment and personalised planning. Your gum health may need attention before treatment. Your case may require a clinician with particular experience. There may also be different stages or additional treatment involved.

You should therefore receive a personalised treatment plan and a clear breakdown of the costs involved, so you understand what you are being offered before making your decision.

Rather than asking only:

“How much is an implant?”

It can be far more useful to ask:

“What am I getting for that cost, why is this treatment being recommended for me, and who will be carrying it out?”

Think about the years ahead, not simply the treatment today

Dental implants are intended to be a long-term investment in your health and confidence.

That makes the decisions made before treatment particularly important.

The assessment, diagnosis, condition of your gums, treatment planning and the experience of the clinician all deserve consideration alongside cost. Our checklist specifically encourages patients to think about long-term quality rather than short-term savings.

You should also feel comfortable with the person treating you. You should have time to ask questions, understand the proposed treatment and feel confident about proceeding.

Become a better-informed implant patient

You don’t need to become an expert in dental implants.

You simply need to know the right questions to ask.

That’s why we’ve put together our Dental Implant Checklist for you to download, keep and use when considering your options.

Take it to your consultation. Go through the questions. And if something hasn’t been assessed, discussed or explained, ask why.

A good clinician should be happy to answer your questions.
