Sometimes it’s the simple things you want to know before an appointment.

Where should I park? Who will I see? How long will my appointment take? What happens when I arrive? Do I need to bring anything with me?

We’ve answered some of the practical questions patients often ask about visiting Perio & Implants, so you know where to go, what to expect and how to prepare for your appointment.

FAQs

What is Perio & Implant Dental Referral Centre?

We are a specialist dental referral centre in East Twickenham, close to Richmond Bridge, providing advanced care in periodontics (gum treatment), dental implants, bone grafting and complex restorative and implant-related treatment.

Our focus is specialist and advanced care rather than general dentistry. This means our clinicians can work closely with your own dentist and, where appropriate, return you to their ongoing care following treatment.

What makes Perio & Implant different from a general dental practice?

Our team includes UK GDC-registered Specialists with advanced postgraduate training and extensive experience in periodontics, implant dentistry and complex restorative care.

Our clinicians also contribute to postgraduate dental education, university teaching and the training of other dental professionals.

For our patients, this means treatment is carefully assessed, evidence-based and planned around the long-term health of your teeth, gums, bone and implants – not simply the immediate problem.

Do I need to be referred by my dentist?

No. We welcome both dentist-referred and self-referred patients.

If your dentist has referred you, we will work closely with them and keep them informed throughout your care.

If you have concerns about your gums, missing teeth, an existing implant or previous dental treatment, you can also contact us directly for specialist advice.

Will you take over from my usual dentist?

No. We are a referral centre and do not provide routine general dentistry.

If you have been referred by your dentist, we work collaboratively with them and keep them updated throughout your treatment. Once the specialist phase of your care is complete, you will normally return to your dentist for your ongoing general dental care.

What happens at my first consultation?

Your consultation is much more than simply a quick look at the problem.

Your clinician will take time to understand your concerns, dental and medical history and what you would like to achieve. They will carry out a detailed clinical assessment and, where appropriate, assess your teeth, gums, bite, bone and existing dental work.

Relevant intraoral X-rays are included within your initial consultation fee.

The purpose is to establish a clear diagnosis before recommending treatment.

How much is the initial consultation?

Our initial consultation includes a comprehensive specialist assessment and any relevant intraoral X-rays required as part of your appointment.

For our current consultation fees, please visit our Fees page.

Following your assessment, if treatment is recommended, we will explain your options and provide you with a personalised treatment plan, including the associated fees.

More complex consultations, including certain second opinions or assessments of existing implants, may have a different fee. Our team will explain this when you book.

Why do I need a specialist consultation before you can tell me what treatment I need?

Because no two mouths – or patients – are the same.

An implant, for example, depends upon much more than whether there is a gap. We need to consider the health of the gums, the available bone, your bite, neighbouring teeth, medical history and your long-term prognosis.

Likewise, gum disease can vary considerably in its extent and severity.

A thorough assessment allows us to understand the complete picture and provide you with treatment options based on your individual circumstances.

Will I be given a treatment plan?

Yes. Following your assessment, we will explain our findings and discuss the options available to you.

Where treatment is recommended, you will receive a bespoke treatment plan, including the proposed treatment and associated fees.

We believe strongly in shared decision-making. We want you to understand your options, ask questions and have the information you need before deciding how you would like to proceed.

Do I have to decide about treatment at my consultation?

No.

Your consultation is there to give you information and specialist advice. You will have the opportunity to understand your diagnosis, discuss your options and ask questions.

We want you to feel comfortable and informed rather than pressured into making a decision.

My gums bleed. Should I be worried?

Bleeding gums can be an early sign of gum disease and shouldn’t simply be ignored.

Gum disease can sometimes progress with relatively few symptoms, so an assessment can help establish what is happening and whether treatment is required.

Our Specialist Periodontal team manages all stages of gum disease, from early problems through to more advanced and complex cases.

Can gum disease be treated?

Yes. In many cases gum disease can be successfully stabilised and managed.

The type of treatment required depends on the extent and severity of the disease. Treatment may involve improved home care, professional periodontal treatment, non-surgical treatment and, in some cases, periodontal surgery or regenerative procedures.

Long-term maintenance is also an important part of keeping gum disease stable.

Do you treat gum recession?

Yes.

Receding gums can have several causes, and treatment depends upon why the recession has occurred and the condition of the surrounding gum and bone.

Our periodontal team can assess the recession and advise whether monitoring, changes to home care or gum grafting and other periodontal procedures may be appropriate.

Do you offer gum grafting?

Yes. Gum grafting and treatment for recession form part of the advanced periodontal care available at the centre.

An assessment is required first to establish whether grafting is suitable and which technique is most appropriate.

Do you offer regenerative periodontal treatment?

Yes. Where clinically appropriate, regenerative techniques may be used to help rebuild tissues that have been damaged by periodontal disease.

Your Specialist will explain whether regenerative treatment is suitable for your particular situation.

Do you have a hygienist?

Yes.

Our hygienist works closely with our periodontal team, supporting patients during active treatment and providing supportive periodontal maintenance afterwards.

This long-term maintenance is an important part of protecting the results of treatment and helping patients maintain healthy gums.

Do you provide laser or ‘pinhole’ gum treatment?

No.

Our treatment techniques are based on established evidence and current best-practice periodontal protocols. We focus on techniques supported by clinical evidence and recognised professional periodontal organisations.

Do you provide dental implants?

Yes. Implant dentistry is a major part of our specialist service.

We provide treatment ranging from replacement of a single missing tooth to more complex implant cases requiring advanced planning, bone grafting or management of previous implant problems.

Why choose a Specialist Periodontist for dental implant treatment?

Successful implant treatment depends heavily upon the health and quality of the gums and supporting bone.

Specialist Periodontists undertake advanced training in these areas and are experienced in assessing and managing gum disease, bone loss, grafting, implant placement and implant-related complications.

Our aim isn’t simply to place an implant – it is to plan treatment carefully to give your implant the best possible foundation for long-term health and function.

Do dental implants hurt?

Implant placement is normally carried out using local anaesthetic.

Patients are carefully looked after before, during and after treatment, and we will explain what you can expect following your particular procedure.

Many patients are surprised by how manageable implant treatment is.

How long does dental implant treatment take?

It varies.

Straightforward implant treatment may take several months from placement to the final restoration because time is required for healing and integration with the bone.

If you require an extraction, bone grafting, gum treatment or other preparatory procedures, treatment may take longer.

We prefer to allow the biology to dictate the appropriate timescale rather than rush treatment.

How long do dental implants last?

With good oral hygiene, appropriate treatment planning and regular professional maintenance, dental implants can provide a long-term solution and may last for many years.

However, implants are not maintenance-free. Like natural teeth, they require excellent home care and regular professional monitoring.

What if I don’t have enough bone for an implant?

Lack of bone does not necessarily mean you cannot have an implant.

Our clinicians are experienced in bone grafting and regenerative procedures, including more complex grafting and sinus augmentation where clinically appropriate.

Your assessment will establish how much bone is available and whether additional treatment is required.

Do you treat problems with existing implants?

Yes.

We see patients experiencing problems with existing dental implants, including inflammation and bone loss around implants (peri-implant disease/peri-implantitis) and more complex implant or restorative complications.

You can be referred by your dentist or contact us directly for an assessment or second opinion.

Do you provide All-on-4 or All-on-6 treatment?

This is not the principal treatment concept we follow at Perio & Implant.

Our approach is to assess each patient individually and discuss the treatment options that we believe are supported by appropriate clinical evidence and offer a predictable long-term solution.

I’m very nervous about dental treatment. Can you help?

Absolutely. Please tell us when you contact the practice if you are anxious or have had difficult dental experiences in the past.

Our team is accustomed to looking after nervous patients and will take time to explain your treatment and help you feel comfortable.

Do you provide sedation?

Yes.

IV conscious sedation is available for suitable patients, particularly those who are anxious about treatment or who are undergoing longer or more involved procedures.

Your suitability for sedation will be assessed beforehand.

Will I be asleep during IV sedation?

Conscious sedation is different from a general anaesthetic.

The medication is designed to make you feel deeply relaxed and comfortable while your clinical team continues to monitor you carefully throughout your procedure. Many patients have little recollection of their treatment afterwards.

Will I need someone to take me home after sedation?

Yes.

If you are having IV sedation, you will need to arrange for a responsible adult to escort you home and stay with you for the appropriate period afterwards.

You will also be given specific instructions about what you should and shouldn’t do following sedation.

My dentist has referred me. What happens next?

Once we receive your referral, our team will contact you to arrange your specialist consultation.

Your dentist may also provide us with relevant X-rays, photographs and clinical information so that we understand why you have been referred.

Will my dentist know what treatment I have?

Yes.

Communication with referring dentists is an important part of our service.

We keep your dentist informed during the assessment and treatment process and provide relevant information about your progress, treatment and ongoing maintenance requirements.

Can my dentist come to an appointment with me?

Yes.

We welcome referring clinicians who would like to attend consultations or treatment appointments with their patients.

We see specialist dentistry as a collaborative process between you, your own dentist and our specialist team.

How much will my treatment cost?

Because specialist treatment is individual to each patient, it is not always possible to provide an accurate treatment cost before your assessment.

Following your consultation and any necessary investigations, we will explain the treatment options available and provide a personalised treatment plan with the associated fees.

Why can specialist implant treatment cost more?

Specialist treatment often involves advanced training, detailed diagnostics and planning, high-quality materials, specialist equipment and, in more complex cases, additional procedures such as bone or gum grafting.

Our philosophy is to focus on predictability, quality and long-term outcomes, rather than simply finding the quickest or cheapest solution.

Will I need maintenance after my treatment?

Very often, yes – and we consider this an important part of successful treatment.

Whether you have received periodontal or implant treatment, regular professional maintenance combined with excellent home care can make a significant difference to your long-term outcome.

We will explain the maintenance programme we recommend for you and, where appropriate, coordinate this with your own dentist and hygienist.

Every patient who comes to us is different, so your question may not be covered here.
