“I had been taking Amlodipine for over a year, and it hadn’t even crossed my mind that it could be affecting my gums”.
My First Visit with Dr. Chong
Walking into Perio & Implants Dental Referral Centre, I felt nervous. I thought I was going to hear bad news—that I would need to have teeth removed. But from the moment I met Dr. Chong, I felt reassured. He took his time explaining everything to me in a way that made sense.
During my examination, he found that my gums were not in a great shape—I had deep pockets of infection, a lot of plaque build-up, and significant bone loss around some teeth. He also noticed something unusual: my gums were growing over my teeth in a thick, swollen way, which he suspected was linked to one of my medications.

A Surprising Cause of My Gum Problems
Dr. Chong explained that some blood pressure medications, like Amlodipine, can cause gum overgrowth (gingival hyperplasia), making gum disease even worse. I had been taking Amlodipine for over a year, and it hadn’t even crossed my mind that it could be affecting my gums.
He advised me to speak to my doctor about whether I could reduce or change my medication, while he worked on treating my gums with deep cleaning (non-surgical periodontal treatment) and giving me a better oral hygiene routine to follow at home.
The Results – A Huge Transformation in Just 2 Months
I spoke to my GP, who agreed to change my medication, and I committed to following Dr. Chong’s advice to the letter. The results were unbelievable!
✔️ My bleeding reduced significantly – from almost 40% of my gums bleeding to just 14%!
✔️ My gum swelling reduced, and they no longer felt puffy and uncomfortable.
✔️ My teeth felt stronger, and my pockets of infection started to shrink.
✔️ I now brush properly and use interdental brushes—something I had never done before!
Dr. Chong told me that with continued maintenance, my gum health will keep improving, and I can keep my natural teeth for years to come.

My Advice to Anyone with Bleeding or Swollen Gums
If your gums are bleeding, don’t ignore it. I wish I had taken action sooner. What I thought was just “bad gums” turned out to be a mix of severe gum disease and a reaction to my medication.
Thanks to Dr. Chong and his team, I now have the knowledge, treatment, and confidence to take care of my teeth properly.
If you’ve noticed your gums bleeding, swelling, or looking different, I highly recommend seeing a specialist—you might be surprised at what’s really going on.
