Patient Story: “I Thought Gum Disease Meant I’d Lose My Teeth… But I Was Wrong.”
When I first came to Perio & Implants, Richmond, I was terrified. I’d been told I had a deep gum pocket around one of my back teeth, and everywhere I looked online seemed to say the same thing: “Once you have gum disease, tooth loss is inevitable.”
I genuinely believed I was going to lose my tooth.
Then I met Dr Ros O’Leary.
She took the time to explain exactly what was happening, why this particular area had broken down, and—most importantly—what could be done. She didn’t rush me, didn’t overwhelm me, and for the first time I felt hopeful. She recommended regenerative periodontal surgery to save the tooth, followed by a long-term maintenance programme to keep everything stable.
The surgery went smoothly, but what has stayed with me is the care I’ve received ever since. I now return to the practice regularly for maintenance visits. I’ve become much more aware of my gum health, and I feel empowered—not anxious—because I finally understand what it takes to keep things stable.
That was 20 years ago.

Regular maintenance is the key
Today, the tooth that I once feared losing is still there, stable, comfortable and perfectly usable. My gums no longer bleed and the pocket has remained stable for years. It’s incredibly reassuring to know that if my gum condition ever worsens, I’m being monitored by experts I trust.
What I’ve learned is something I wish every patient knew:
Just because you have gum disease doesn’t mean you will lose your teeth.
With the right specialist care and regular maintenance, things can stay healthy for decades.
I’m so grateful I found Perio & Implants. They saved my tooth—and gave me confidence in my smile again.
