NEW RESEARCH: Your Oral Microbiome: A Rainforest in Your Mouth

Your mouth is home to one of the most diverse ecosystems in the human body — the oral microbiome. Like a rainforest, it’s full of life, complexity, and balance. Within this ecosystem live hundreds of species of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms, most of which are essential for good health.
How Your Oral Microbiome Is Formed
Your oral microbiome begins forming at birth. It’s seeded by microbes transferred from parents (especially the mother), skin contact, and feeding — for example, through breastfeeding. As we grow, it changes with diet, environment, dental development, hormones, medication, and oral-care habits.
Each surface in your mouth — your teeth, tongue, cheeks, and gums — hosts its own community of microbes. This diverse, personalised “microbial fingerprint” is normally very stable, but can be reshaped by life stages such as puberty, pregnancy, and ageing.
Why Balance Matters
Not all bacteria are bad. Many act as protectors — keeping harmful microbes in check, maintaining pH balance, and calming inflammation. When this natural harmony (known as eubiosis) is disrupted — by stress, smoking, sugary diets, medications, or dry mouth — harmful species can dominate (dysbiosis).
That imbalance can trigger gum inflammation, caries, and even affect the rest of the body through chronic low-grade inflammation.
Is It More Important Than Your Gut Microbiome?
Both the oral and gut microbiomes are vital — and strongly connected through what researchers call the gum–gut axis.
The oral microbiome is the second most diverse in the human body, just behind the gut.
While the gut microbiome influences digestion and immunity, the oral microbiome acts as the first line of defence, shaping what enters the body and influencing systemic inflammation.
Rather than being “more important,” the oral microbiome is equally essential and works in partnership with the gut. A balanced mouth supports a balanced body.
How to Support Your Oral Microbiome
- Brush twice daily and clean between your teeth
- Stay hydrated — saliva nourishes and regulates your microbial community
- Eat a balanced, fibre-rich diet and limit sugar and processed foods.
- Avoid smoking and frequent use of alcohol-based mouthwashes.
- Manage stress and maintain general immune fitness — your microbiota depends on it.

Dr Chong Lim, Specialist Periodontist, explains:
“Your oral microbiome is like a rainforest — diverse, balanced, and vital. When that balance is lost, inflammation begins. A healthy microbiome doesn’t just protect your gums — it helps protect your whole body.”
Keeping your oral microbiome in balance means protecting both your smile and your overall wellbeing.
