Patient History: The patient was referred to our specialist, Dr Estela at Perio and Implants, due to an unresolved periodontal pocket located at the distal aspect of the maxillary right first molar.
Clinical Intervention: After a thorough examination, Dr Estela Baz presented a treatment plan centred around the preservation of the tooth. A non-surgical approach was adopted to eliminate the subgingival calculus that was identified as the root cause of the persistent problem. The goal was to promote healing of the periodontal pocket and avert the need for tooth extraction.
Patient Education: In addition to the clinical approach, Dr Baz provided the patient with detailed oral hygiene instructions, particularly emphasising the cleaning of the problematic area. The patient demonstrated a high level of compliance with these instructions.
Follow-Up Results: Upon re-evaluation two months later, radiographic assessment revealed significant improvement. The periodontal pocket had notably reduced in size, and there was evident bone regeneration around the tooth. This positive outcome validated our treatment strategy and highlighted the effectiveness of patient education and compliance.
Learning Outcomes: This case demonstrates the effectiveness of non-surgical therapy in managing periodontal disease. The approach successfully eliminated subgingival calculus, thereby enhancing the prognosis of the root. Additionally, it led to a significant reduction in the periodontal pocket and overall improvement in the patient’s oral health. This underscores the substantial potential of non-surgical interventions in dental care.
